Famous for its rich fishing heritage

Noonu Atoll, located in the northern Maldives, is famous for its rich fishing heritage, which is the primary livelihood for the majority of its residents. Fishing is not just a job but a way of life, with even younger generations actively involved in the industry. Compared to other sectors, fishing provides a higher income, and as the tools and vessels used in fishing continue to evolve, more people are drawn into this thriving industry. Though tourism began to develop in Noonu Atoll in 2007 with the introduction of its first resort, the government did not initially prioritize the atoll as a tourist destination. By 2011, the Zitali Resort opened its doors, giving visitors a chance to explore this lesser-known part of the Maldives. Prior to this, locals were not particularly interested in resort work, as fishing remained their passion and main income source. They proudly say, "Fishing is a game," and continue to love the craft. Today, most locals own their own speedboats and...

Maldives Implements Stringent Tobacco Control Measures

The Maldives has escalated its tobacco control measures, enforcing a ban on the production of tobacco products within the country. This action follows an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act in November of last year, which not only outlaws the manufacture of cigarettes, cigars, and vaping products but also extends to prohibiting the import of any materials used in their production. The Ministry of Health has issued directives to the Maldives Customs Service, with a letter dated December 24, explicitly stating the ban on any form of tobacco production under Article 10 of the amended Act. This document, which has been circulating on social media, shows the government’s intent to curb tobacco use by halting production and seizing any equipment or materials involved in tobacco manufacturing. An official from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) clarified to Mihaaru that the letter in question is a procedural directive for implementing existing laws, rather than a new regulation. The To...
