MMPRC / Visit Maldives welcomed Hong Kong Airlines Flight HX791 to the Maldives for the first time since 2020. A special ceremony was held to celebrate the return of tourists to the Maldives from Hong Kong Airlines, which had been absent since the start of the pandemic. The event was attended by dignitaries from the Maldives government, including the ambassador from the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Miss Wang Lixin. MACL, Maldives Immigration, and Maldives Customs Service were also present, as well as representatives from various government-related enterprises and tourism associations in the country. The tourists were welcomed with the traditional “BoduBeru”, a colorful cultural performance, and a special gift pack with flowers.
China has always been one of the most important markets for Maldives tourism. The re-establishment of direct flights to the Maldives from China on 18 January 2023 marked the end of 3 years of border closure caused by the Covid pandemic. Before 2020 the Chinese market had always been at the top of the arrival charts to Maldives. Last year Maldives welcomed 187,118 visitors from China. This confirms that China is one of the top 3 source markets for Maldives. Arrivals have been steadily increasing since the re-opening of borders. Hong Kong continues to be an important market in this region. The introduction of direct flights from Hong Kong is expected to continue to increase arrivals.
MMPRC continues to support the Maldives' position as the best destination in the China market with strategic marketing initiatives. In the year 2023, the company successfully conducted joint online promotions as well as familiarisation trips in the Maldives. Last year, the country saw its highest tourist arrivals ever, with over 1.8m tourists. The country also won the title of ‘Best World’s Landing Destination’ for the fourth year in a row at the World Travel Awards, and was honored as the ‘Best Tourist Board’ for the second year in a row. In addition, the country was awarded the ‘Best of the World’ Award’ for its ability to recover quickly and thrive in the face of disruptions.
