The breadfruit or Bambukeyo

Breadfruit is a widely consumed staple in the Maldives, used in a variety of dishes. It can be prepared by steaming, frying, baking, currying, and cooking with rice.

Prior to cleaning the breadfruit, Maldivians typically apply oil to their hands and knives to prevent the sticky latex from sticking. They then peel the breadfruit and remove the core.

In the Maldives, breadfruit is cut in various ways depending on the dish being prepared. For the delicious dessert bondibaiy, it is diced into small cubes. Larger cubes are used for sweet dishes and curries, while thin slices are made for chips.

Rich in carbohydrates, breadfruit is a great source of energy. It is also high in potassium, which helps lower blood pressure and regulate heart rate. With its high fiber content, breadfruit can aid in managing diabetes. Additionally, breadfruit contains essential nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium, and iron.
